What happens after a container is returned?

Returning an empty drink container is only the beginning of its journey.

3. The containers are collected

The returned containers are collected and transported for further processing.

Collection arrangements will depend on the rules and logistics of the relevant Deposit Return Scheme.

4. Returns are verified

Containers may be counted and checked to confirm the number of eligible containers returned.

This verification can help reconcile retailer records and support accurate payments.

5. The materials are sorted and recycled

Once processed, containers are separated into material streams, such as:

• PET plastic
• Aluminium

The recovered material can then be recycled and used to manufacture new products, including new drink containers.
